Get Outdoors

After a colder than usual winter, Spring is now in full effect! It is the perfect time to take your yoga practice Outdoors!

Being out in nature has a profound effect on our energy, it revitalizes us, helps us ground, and provides us with the feeling we had as a child every time we got out in nature – Running wild without a care in the world, the wind in our hair, listening to the sounds of birds, bugs and frogs all around, gazing up into the sky, soaking up the warmth of  the sun (along with some vitamin D!) – and it brings a whole new dimension to our personal practice, whether it’s a one-on-one session, a public class at sunset, or a simple mindful walk through the trails to the white sand beach to meditate. Being outdoors is natural but in this day and age, it’s has become harder to give ourself the time to get out there… but it’s worth it!

I just spent the month of April creating an outdoor studio nestled in the forest on our property, where I am now offering private sessions. A one-on-one approach to assist you reach your goals and create a plan that suits your needs and lifestyle. I am looking forward to sharing my new space with my friends, neighbours, clients, and visitors. For private sessions please email me to schedule a free half-hour consultation and see if we can be a good fit.

Of course, the beautiful space I created has also become a hub for many other meditative pursuits such as knitting, creating yarn on my spinning wheel, soaking up the sunshine, listening to nature, sharing a pot of tea and conversation.

Private Sessions

Have you ever felt like the Tin Man in a Yoga Class? Did you ever accidentally join an intermediate class when you are a beginner? Do you have specific needs you would like to work on and address? Then a group yoga class may not be for you right now!!!

Private Sessions

If you would like a one-on-one approach to assist you in reaching your goals, contact me for a private session! I offer a free half-hour consultation session where we can get together and create a plan that suits your specific needs and lifestyle.

Chakras – the Sacred Wheels

Over the next few months, I’ll be working on the theme of the Chakras in the yoga classes I teach on Cortes Island. So I thought I would share some information on where your Chakras are in your body, why we care about them, and just some general thoughts on the subject. Each week I’ll dig deeper into each one!

Main Chakras

Chakras are energy centres that run the length of the spinal cord in our body. They play a role in our spiritual, emotional, and physical health. The word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit word for “wheel” or “circle”. There are 7 main Chakras that are recognized in common practice, two of which are aligned vertically and five others which open horizontally (on both our front and our back even though we tend to focus more on the front openings). Together they form a channel – kind of like a flute with each Chakra like a note on the scale. And this is not far from the truth since each Chakra has its own colour, note, vowel sound and symbol. They also each correspond to an organ, system, and gland in our body.

The first Chakra is located at the base of the spine and is aligned with the earth.  And as you can see on the image, the other Chakras move up the spine to the crown of the head, which is aligned with the cosmos and our Higher Self. Keep in mind, these are the main ones only and there is said to be more, both in our physical and ethereal bodies! In Yoga philosophy, it is believed that each Chakra needs to be open and aligned for the energy – or Prana – to flow harmoniously through the body. When they are aligned we feel that we are vibrating optimally, which makes us energetic and connected to our body, mind, and soul and everything around us. The first Chakra I will deepen in my practice is the Anahata (Heart) Chakra which is where we centre ourselves for love, compassion, and harmony!

Laura Balducci

It took me a long to accept the idea that self-care is not selfish, but I’m sure glad I saw the light in the end. I have degenerative disc disease and with that comes ongoing pain, issues, and migraines due to my bones rubbing against each other. A few years back, I discovered the Pranamat. I did a lot of research into its benefits, and then I tried it and never looked back. It’s a portable massage and reflexology mat that relieves pain, promotes blood circulation and sleep… and it’s easy to travel with! When my migraines creep up, I lie on my mat and pillow and I can feel the tension melt away; I also use my mini mat in my yoga practise for standing poses and Savasana.  If I can help one person with their pain or issues, or with treating themselves to some self-care, then I have succeeded in my passion to help people feel great and healthy. If you or a loved one suffers from back pain, insomnia, or other such issues, or if you are active and love or need to treat yourself or a loved one, then check out the link

Anahata (Heart) Chakra

This month at Om Studio I will be centering my practice around the theme of the Heart Chakra, which feels appropriate since this is a time of year when many people think about their relationships with loved ones. Now I’m not much for hallmark celebrations, which sometimes feel forced on us, and I also think that we can share our heart all year round… but I do believe in love, compassion, gratitude and harmony!

The Heart Chakra is associated with the body parts and organs that include the heart, the circulatory system, the lungs and the immune system. Since February is the coldest month of the year so far in Canada these all seem very appropriate to work on at this time of year. The energetic association with the Heart Chakra includes love, compassion, giving, gratitude, joy, and relationships.

When this Chakra is balanced, we can feel love and compassion for ourselves and for others. It becomes easier for us to receive love and we are also more generous and our relationships flourish. We also feel in harmony with our body, mind, and soul. The colour associated with this Chakra is green (and also sometimes pink), which as an artist I find very interesting since in colour theory, the colour green represents harmony… wink wink!

Please join me on the mat at Om Studio, Monday to Friday. Doors open at 8:45 am class starts a 9 am for an hour of Karma Vinyasa Flow.
